National historical-archeological reserve "Veliki Preslav"
The National historical-archaeological reserve with a museum "Veliki Preslav" is situated upon the ruins of the Old Bulgarian capital (893-972) and covers about 500 ha of its area. This institution has a long history and its purpose is to track out, study, keep and to make popular the cultural inheritance of this ancient and mystical town. The investigations which last more than a century show that Preslav had been designed and built by its creators as a magnificent town which deserved to compete with the Byzantine capital Constantinople. This was the capital of the First Bulgarian country, established by Asparuh. The ruins of monumental architectural objects cover an area of 23 km2. In the archaeological museum the style of living of the population is shown and its material and spiritual culture within the period of VII-X century.
Established by Asparuh in year 681, probably above an old Slav settlement, Pliska was the Bulgarian capital until the year 893.
At 3 kilometers to the West of Shoumen city rises the Shoumen fortress, which has been in existence for more than 3200 years. The place was inhabited during the early iron period /XIIth century before Christ/. Later on fortresses have been built here by Thracians, Romans and the Byzantines.

The most remarkable monument in the reserve is the unique relief Madara rider. The only one in Europe it is model of the old Bulgarian art and symbolizes the power and majesty of the Bulgarian country.
